character profile

C.C. is the tritagonist of the anime series, Code Geass. She's an immortal who is immune to other Geass powers and can regenerate after "death". She received a Geass power generations ago. She was then tricked into relinquishing this power and becoming one who bestows the Geass onto others. Like those before her, she continues to do this until she finds a person who will inherit the burden of Geass and allow C.C. to die.

Because LeLouch promises to fulfill this responsibility, C.C. becomes his attendant throughout the series. Jaded from her long immortal life, her personality is very passive, sarcastic, and lethargic. Initially, she freeloads off of LeLouch at his wealthy academy. As the rebellion grows larger, C.C. takes a more active role in battles and assistance. As she was the only one (at first) who knew of LeLouch's intent and Geass powers, she became Zero's closest confidante.

series profile

Code Geass: LeLouch of the Rebellion is an anime series that aired in 2006-2007. It was produced by Sunrise Inc with character designs by CLAMP. It falls into the genre of mecha, action, and comedy. The popular title has grown into a fairly sized franchise with various drama cd, manga, and video game adapations.

The storyline follows young teenager LeLouch as he tries to overcome a tyrannical world order. He is the prince of the ruling family of Britannia, the major world power that is colonizing other countries, but was outcasted at a young age. After a chance encounter with C.C., she grants him the supernatural power of Geass. He decides to use this ability to build a btter world. Unfortunately, the road to peace is littered with heartache and corpses.

why c.c.?

Despite being one of the most seemingly inhuman characters in the series, C.C. is actually the most human character to me. We change in our lives, frequently and drastically. People go from innocent to love-hungry to bitter to hopeful, and probably everything in between. C.C.'s great because she showed all those sides to her in the series as well. You see her as the fearful servant, got a glimpse of her as a childish, selfish geass user, met her as a tired and indifferent immortal, and then watched her discover that there still is more to life than she had previous thought. It's these shifting dimensions of her personality that make her intriguing.

A general complaint about C.C. arises when fans compare C.C. to Kallen and claim CC's less admirable because she's arguably deceptive or passive. It's rather understandable though. Life is hard and tiresome. Repeatedly dying and be revived is even more draining. If I had to suffer the way she has, my personality would end up the same as well. There's no need for people to bash CC in order to praise Kallen. C.C. behaves in an indirect way because that's what she has realized is the most effective means of living throughout the ages. Even as supernatural person, her changing character is so realistic because most of use have been through those volatile phases of life too.
